ABSTRACT Second language learners create their own glosses while working with written texts. The paper provides some arguments for recognizing this particular learner activity as a vocabulary learning strategy. The strategy, labelled here learner glossing, is not distinguished in the strategy literature. Some results of initial research are also presented and discussed.
